Packaging For Success

With the holiday season rapidly approaching, I thought I'd address the subject of packaging...

As many have said before me, people buy from Etsy shops for the personal touch of getting a special item directly from the maker. I recently read "Packaging That Packs A Punch Article: Call for Responses!" in the Etsy Success forum. They've set up a Flickr account with loads of examples of packaging to help your packaging to stand out in a crowd: etsypackaging. I thought I'd share a few of my favorites:

  1. I'm conflicted on this.....I recycle packing materials and boxes....not always the prettiest of packing materials....and if I do too much with it, it may increase the shipping costs...conflicted....feedback?

    1. ThreeDogs, there are several examples of recycled packaging on the Flickr link. You should check them out. Out of over 4000 packaging examples, I bet that something will work for or inspire you. :-)

  2. I love packaging! I provide display cards/backings and gift boxes for all my jewelry, because it's often purchased as gifts. I package my cards and prints in cellophane sleeves so they arrive in great shape. It all adds to the cost, yes, but I think it adds to the quality of the items.

  3. Brilliant post, thank you BHB:)

Been thinking a lot about packaging recently; we currently make our own boxes from card that contains a recycled element, or from re-purposed card, and add a logo and a bit of raffia.

There are some inspiring ideas here!

  4. *Cough*, sorry, that should have read "Brilliant post, thank you Mad:)"!!!

This is what happens when I do blog comments straight from the Etsy forums, well, that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it, lol! Blame incipient old age and fading eyesight...

  5. I package all of my things in a beautiful damask tissue paper and tie them with wide red ribbon---I like to think of my things as gifts hand made by me, but it also protects them during shipping.....then I tuck in my card under the ribbon and a little note to personalize the whole thing....

  6. I use recycled card to make pillow boxes then stamp different designs, tie with string and add a vintage button- of which I have many! It is worth doing because your customers will enjoy it and your products deserve it.

  7. Great 'rambling,' Mad! I should put more thought and time into my packaging. Maybe it would help with return buyers. There are some really cute, creative and professional ideas on the Flickr account. :o)

  8. I'm just now starting to think more about my packaging. It's a little difficult when sometimes I sell MANY pieces of clothing to a customer, and sometimes it's just one thing. And it's never the same size one thing...so having a "standard" box doesn't really work. That, and I would prefer to reuse packaging materials whenever possible, so the box that I send out something in isn't always the same no matter what. BUT I have just put my 11yr old daughter to work making some pretty tags to now attach to my clothing for when it ships! And I'm thinking of reusing tissue paper from billions of gifts that I've saved over the years. I always seem to have more than necessary for gifting!
